Top 5 Mistakes Entrepreneurs Make When Outsourcing
Whether or not you recently started your business or have been in business for years, you might have made these mistakes. Or hopefully, this will stop you from making at least one of these. Let's dive in!
Hiring the cheapest contractor available is not a good idea. For example, you decide to buy a blouse from a cheap brand that resembles a blouse at a more expensive brand you fell in love with, but you wore a hole in the cheap blouse within a short time due to constant wear. Now, you no longer have the blouse nor the money you spent on it. Similar clothes, investing in help for cheap will often get you what paid for. No business owner wants to overpay, but you need to make sure your budget is adequate when trying to outsource.
Setting unclear expectations will be the demise of any relationship, working or personal. Communication is key! We often tend to keep a lot of information in our heads. If the information is not communicated properly, it has no way of reaching other people. Laying down clear expectations and highlighting specific needs will help breach the gap from the beginning
Overworking one person will lead to burnout and fail to keep your team members in their zone of genius. If you have hired the perfect team member to handle all things social, that is amazing! But just because that team member is a social media genius doesn't mean that they will also be a genius when it comes to newsletter marketing. By chance they are, adding another task to their load could lead to overworking which leads to burnout.
Failing to onboard sets the relationship up for disaster. Successful onboarding sets the tone for the future collaboration. As a business owner, one goal should always be to yourself and your team up for success by providing the right guidance and tools to your new team member. If you have proper systems in place, you will have very little to almost nothing to manually do when onboarding a new team member.
Micromanaging undermines your authority and your team members skill set. If you are at the point of outsourcing, you have realized that you not only need help with tasks, but you also need talent. Micromanaging kills talent! When you manage everything your team members do, you crush their individuality.
By knowing the most common mistakes, the goal is to avoid making these in your own business. But it's okay if you have already made these mistakes. Your goal is to learn from them and create strategies to avoid these pitfalls.
