The Difference Between an OBM and a VA

Does your business need an OBM or a VA? Let’s dive into this a little bit more by understanding the difference between these two. OBM stands for online business manager, and VA stands for a virtual assistant. Don’t worry we are going to get a little deeper into the meaning of them.

One way I have heard it said is that “VAs are the doers, and OBMs are the planners.”

This insight is probably the best way to explain the difference between the two. Now, wait! This is not to say that VAs can’t plan or have ideas or that OBMs don’t do any work. But as a good rule of thumb, you will see OBMs strategizing with the clients and creating plans to create a more successful business. Whereas, VAs, after there is a plan in place, will check the boxes off of the to-do lists.

Another way to differentiate between the two is in their name. One is a manager and the other an assistant. An OBM is going to manage the business, take leadership, and create direction according to the goals/desires of the client. On the other hand, a VA is going to assist the client with business needs by making sure the to-do lists get completed.

When trying to decide which fits your business, it is important to look at your needs, goals, and even your desires. With an OBM, you will be adding a team member to the business that is idea-savvy, growth-oriented, knowledgeable, and strategic. VAs bring a whole other dynamic to the table by being well-versed in the programs and technology they use as well as being hard workers. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

Do you need help management-wise?

Do you need to delegate some tasks?

Do you need someone who specializes in a certain program?

Do you need someone who specializes in business growth?

When it comes down to it, you might find that you need help from both. Most businesses do at some point.

What makes Everyday Virtual Services so unique is that you get the best of both worlds.

Imagine you are the captain of a ship, the ship is your business, and VAs are your hard-working crew. This crew is a team of capable and knowledgeable VAs ready to go, and an OBM behind the wheel steering your metaphorical ship in the right direction.
